The Intercultural Development Inventory™ (IDI) is a valid and reliable assessment of an individual or group’s ability to engage effectively with others across difference. The IDI is based on Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) and research conducted by Mitchell Hammer. The inventory has been used successfully since 1998 in corporate, academic and other settings to focus individual coaching and action-planning, to guide multicultural team development, and to conduct program evaluation and research.
The COMMON TALKS IDI assessment and consulting process includes
1) an orientation session used to introduce the IDI to participants
2) access to an online individual assessment
3) confidential individual and de-identified group profile reports
4) a one-on-one private coaching session for each participant with a Qualified Administrator
5) individualized Intercultural Development Plans (IDP) for each participant
6) a follow-up group session, as appropriate, to explore de-identified aggregated group data, and to engage in group goal setting and action planning using an equity lens
The one-hour orientation session is conducted within the group setting. Qualified IDI Administrators inform participants about confidentiality, define terms and introduce the developmental goal setting approach of the assessment versus a performance evaluation. Administrators explore together with participants any hopes, challenges and fears they may have regarding the assessment process. The process itself is outlined, and questions are answered.
Participants are registered for their individual online assessment and are given a time frame for completion. Once all assessments are completed, participants are given their confidential profile results along with an individualized Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) for their review.
A face to face (or virtual) meeting is then scheduled with each participant to explain their individual IDI profile results with emphasis on goal setting and action planning at the individual level (one-hour coach session).
Following the one-on-one meeting, and if relevant, a group session is scheduled to review de-identified aggregate results and to begin an iterative process of institutional assessment, corporate or group goal setting, action planning and the creation of metrics for change (two-hour session).
Cost is assessed per number of participants and includes the cost of the copyrighted assessment materials, the group orientation, the administration and interpretation of each IDI, the face-to-face individual coaching sessions as well as the follow-up group review and goal-setting session if indicated. We have a per person rate, group rates for groups of 36 or more, and discounts offered for students, Black, Indigenous and People of Color-owned businesses, and for non-profits with an annual income <$125,000. Travel and per diem may be assessed.
Follow-up training and consultation on targeted areas may be contracted for by the individual or within the institution, to address developmental growth and progress toward goals.
